Jan 25, 2012, 3:54 p.m.

NEW YORK, NY — Council Member Fernando Cabrera, Pastor Bill Devlin and a host of other pastors and supporters of Senate Bill 6087A applaud the New York State Senate Education Committee chaired by Senator John J. Flanagan, that voted unanimously on January 24, 2012 to bring SB6087A to the Senate floor for a vote by the general body. SB6087A amends education law in relation to authorizing religious meetings and worship in school buildings and school sites and would allow them to continue to rent meeting space from schools.

“I salute the New York State Senate Education Committee on taking bold and decisive action on this important issue,” said Council Member Fernando Cabrera. “I am confident the Assembly will follow suit, and urge Governor Cuomo to sign the legislation when it reaches his desk.” He continued, “I look forward to our March across the Brooklyn Bridge this Sunday. The fight is not over.”

The Mass March Across Brooklyn Bridge will be held this coming Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. EST and will begin at Cadman Plaza Park, march across the Brooklyn Bridge and end at City Hall Park. Thousands are expected to join Councilmember Cabrera, hundreds of city religious leaders and elected officials as a statement of protest to the Department of Education policy that will evict houses of worship from public school meeting space, effective February 12.
