Well, here we are in June, the month of Dads and Grads. Flag Day is June 14
and summer officially begins on June 21, and all the snowbirds are home, and
the rest of us are lounging in our lawn chairs (yeah, right). The latter
comment brings up an interesting question for those of us who reside in the
suburbs: why do we water grass if all we get to do is cut it? Is it the
color green? Then how about spray painting some concrete green?
Speaking of concrete, those of you who reside in NYC specifically, but any
of the other boroughs, and who don’t traipse east to Fire Island or the
Hamptons, get to have pretty much the run of the city. No crowds in the
restaurants, no push-and-shove on the trains, just a nice — relatively —
calm and quiet Manhattan. Of course, you’ll still get those tourists from
the Eye-Land messing things up now and then, but … well, some things never
change.
We’re going to try a couple of new things this summer in the pages of 50+
LifeStyles. For starters we’re going to include the calendar of events
in the paper every month from now on, although a full calendar of events
will still be available on line at
www.50plusny.com.
We’re also starting a new section called Milestones. Have a milestone in
your life that you’d like to share photographically? Then go HERE and
read how to go about it.
And let’s not forget about the 4th Annual NYS Senior Idol Show. We’re
receiving calls at the rate of two or three a day, so the competition is
crowding up. I have to say — since last year was the first one I attended —
that there are some incredibly talented singers out there, and as the
contest grows in popularity the competition gets fierce. My mother always
called me Johnny One Note, so I do admire those with the ability to bang out
a song. If you’ve the talent and the chops, give 631-286-0058, ext. 251, for
all the details and to get in on the fun … and believe me, it is fun.
In closing, I’d like to acknowledge the passing of one of our writers, Dan
Wohl (Dan Wohl Obit) Dan covered the softball beat for us with aplomb
and the enthusiasm of a man much younger that he. He was also a true
gentleman in every sense of that word. Our condolences to his family.
So, enjoy the month of June and we’ll see you in July.
