baseball, Cincinnati Reds’ Tom Seaver pitched a no-hitter against
the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-0… Willie McCovey, of the San
Francisco Giants, became the twelfth player to hit 500 home runs; The
Neo-Nazis called off plans to march in the Jewish community of
Skokie, Illinois… UNICEF chose the rock group Kansas as
ambassadors of goodwill… The US Supreme Court ordered California medical
school to admit Allan Bakke.

Doug Jones set a record of 14 consecutive saves… Reports revealed
that boxing champion Mike Tyson beat his wife Robin Givens…
In a heavyweight bout in Atlantic City, Tyson KOs Michael Spinks
in 91 seconds, winning him $67 million… New York Yankees manager
Billy Martin’s fifth term ended, with Lou Pinella named as
manager… Singer Bruce Springsteen separated from his wife,
Juliette Phillips… and on the show, The Price is Right, model
Janice Pennington was knocked out by a TV camera… Among those that
departed are Louis L'Amour, western writer, at 80 of cancer; and
