June 1958

Charles de Gaulle became the premier of France… A baseball game between Kansas City and Boston was delayed because of a tornado… Those that were born this month and year include Rogers Nelson, better known as the rocker/actor Prince; Scott Valentine, an actor who played Nick in Family Ties; multi-talented performer, Keenan Ivory Wayans; Eric Heiden, the Wisconsin speed skater who won five gold medals in the 1980 Olympics; Baseball great Wade Boggs.

 

June 1968

Presidential candidate, Robert Kennedy, was shot, and died the next day; and Sirhan Sirhan was indicted for his assassination… US Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren resigned… James Earl Ray, the convicted assassin of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was captured after escaping from prison… This month and year was the final deadline for a person to redeem a silver certificate dollar currency bill for silver bullion… The island of Iwo Jima was returned to Japan by the United States… Daniel Ellsberg was indicted by a grand jury for leaking information known as The Pentagon Papers… In music, the group Gary Puckett and the Union Gap released “Lady Willpower;” The Rolling Stones released “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and Simon & Garfunkel released “Mrs. Robinson,” which went to #1 on the Billboard Chart… In Beatles news, John Lennon and Yoko Ono exhibit their first official joint venture at the Arts Lab in London. Soon after, they plant acorns outside Coventry Cathedral as a conceptual “living arts sculpture”… In sports, Don Drysdale, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitched a record 58 consecutive scoreless innings… Bobby Bonds, as a San Francisco Giant, hit a grand slam in his first major league game… In golf, Lee Trevino was the first to play all four rounds of the US Open under par… Those born include Jason Donovan, a rocker/actor; and Patrick Stuart in Hollywood, California, an actor in the series, All My Children… Those that departed include Helen Keller, at 87.

 

June 1978

The Gutenberg Bible, one of 21 existing, sold for $2.4 million in London… David Berkowitz (known as the Son of Sam) was sentenced in New York to 25 years to life… In professional boxing, Heavyweight Larry Holmes won a decision over Ken Norton for the WBC crown… Jordan’s King Hussein married a 26-year-old American… In baseball, Cincinnati Reds’ Tom Seaver pitched a no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-0… Willie McCovey, of the San Francisco Giants, became the twelfth player to hit 500 home runs; The Neo-Nazis called off plans to march in the Jewish community of Skokie, Illinois… UNICEF chose the rock group Kansas as ambassadors of goodwill… The US Supreme Court ordered California medical school to admit Allan Bakke.

 

June 1988

Microsoft released MS DOS 4.0… In Brooklyn, a bus depot honoring Jackie Gleason is dedicated for his role in the Honeymooners… Former Beatle George Harrison released “This Is Love”… At Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium the longest baseball game was played, lasting five hours, 46 minutes, with the Orioles beating the Yankees 7-6 in 14 innings… Galina Chistyakova of the USSR set a women’s long jump record of 24 feet eight inches… The New York Yankees Rick Rhoden became the first American League pitcher to DH (be the designated hitter)… This year, the Boston Red Sox, who were 10 games back in the standings, win the American League East title; Cleveland Indians pitcher Doug Jones set a record of 14 consecutive saves… Reports revealed that boxing champion Mike Tyson beat his wife Robin Givens… In a heavyweight bout in Atlantic City, Tyson KOs Michael Spinks in 91 seconds, winning him $67 million… New York Yankees manager Billy Martin’s fifth term ended, with Lou Pinella named as manager… Singer Bruce Springsteen separated from his wife, Juliette Phillips… and on the show, The Price is Right, model Janice Pennington was knocked out by a TV camera… Among those that departed are Louis L'Amour, western writer, at 80 of cancer; and Dennis Day, singer on the Jack Benny Show, of Lou Gehrig’s disease at 71.
